In fiktiven Briefen und Tagebucheinträgen kommt der Leser den Figuren und ihren Kriegserfahrungen so nahe wie selten in der Literatur, lobt Knipphals.

Was weiß man schon über das Lebensgefühl vergangener Zeiten? Arno Geigers Roman "Unter der Drachenwand" rekonstruiert einfühlsam die Gemütslage am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges.

"unter der Drachenwand" beleuchtet verschiedene Leben zu der Zeit des zweiten Weltkrieges. Da ist der junge Soldat, der sich mit allen Mittel dagegen wehrt, wieder an die Front geschickt zu werden. Und seine Geliebte, die mit ihrem Kind in ein kleines Dorf geflohen ist, ihre Familie allerdings in Wien zurücklassen musste.

"Unter der Drachenwand" habe ich gern gelesen. Geigers scheint beim Erzählen SEINE Sprache zu erfinden, so kam es mir vor. Dadurch wurde sein Hauptheld Veit Kolbe für mich zu einer faszinierenden Figur, mit der ich die tausendmal erzählte Nazizeit noch einmal neu - eben sehr privat, konkret und auch berührend - betrachten durfte.

Auf diesen Briefen ist Geigers neuer Roman „Unter der Drachenwand“ aufgebaut. „Man könnte sagen, der Roman ist ein erfundenes Haus mit echten Türen und Fenstern.“ Hauptperson des Romans ist Veit Kolbe, ein 23-jähriger Soldat, der nach einer schweren Kriegsverletzung zur Genesung in seine Heimatstadt Wien zurückkehrt.
